One of the most controversial subjects in Christianity (besides homosexuality) is the issue of glossolalia, or "speaking in tongues", which many Charismatic and Pentecostal believers practice. There are differences of opinion as to the validity, the purpose, or the nature of this phenomenon. There are even differences of opinion on whether or not this is a spiritual gift, an ability that can be learned, and whether or not the practice of speaking in tongues is essential for salvation. There are almost as many views on the subject as there are Pentecostal or Charismatic denominations.
Speaking in tongues
- Message
I think it's interesting how many pentecostal denominations there are- the oneness, the trinity, all just barely different.
Oneness (UPC) believing you aren't saved unless you speak in tongues.
Interesting, i grew up baptist but always believed in the trinity (not that I will debate it)...
but one of my key thoughts was, I know God is ok with me being gay because gays still speak in tongues and you have to be saved to be gay right?
I had such a peace about my relationship with God after realizing I still spoke in tongues and many others did too who I knew were gay!
Perhaps “speaking in tongues” is a wonderfully expressive facility that speaks outside of human cognition in moans and groans, and grunts beyond petition and verbosity and intellectual comprehension. It may well be a sign of some mysterious but freely exercised mediation between God and man, but doesn’t it fall short of any Biblical requirement absent the Pauline limits placed upon it? We should be aware that many people who are not and would not be Christian sometimes speak with noises that sound like tongues. The question then becomes to whom are they speaking and to what avail?
I think it is definitely a mystery that our minds cant quite explain. Who can fully explain the things of God? We are so small in contrast to an infinite God- we are but a speck in contrast to the ever-living, ever-knowing, ever-present God. I can't explain the tongues thing but the way I have come to understand things, there are times when there are spiritual things going on in our lives that we are not even aware of yet God is and the way I would speak to tongues is, at times the Holy Spirit inside of me is helping me to get out whatever is going on that I dont fully understand.
I may never be able to explain it, but I know that at times, when I have felt extremely overwhelmed or down, I can go to a place in my time with God and if I speak in tongues (between me and God), at times it seems as though whatever burden or heaviness I was carrying is lifted.
